Book of the Dead
Book of the Dead is a collection of texts that were used in ancient Egyptian funeral rites and were composed by ancient Egyptian scribes. Generally found on pyramids, tombs, coffins and scrolls of papyrus, the hymns, spells, prayers found in the book provided guidance to the newly dead for negotiating the important but difficult journey to the afterlife. The "Negative Confession" was to be recited just before a dead person's heart was weighed on the scales of the Hall of Ma'at. It was a list of claims meant to justify why the newly deceased was worthy of an afterlife free of punishment.
