Fake Empathy

We are told to respect
The people who surround us
To say please and thank you
Even if we're forced to

People wearing masks
To disguise oneself
From society,
Hiding their deepest fears

So some take advantage
Of this digital age
To express their aches
On any internet page

In person,
We disregard
Their emotional compulsions
See it as a game
Or an act for attention

So I sit here thinking
That the saddest thing
Is to witness others
Question the stories
That make up their being
